The Works Progress Administration's Federal Theatre Project sponsored and published a series of monographs throughout the late 1930s, this volume being a compilation of articles on folk songs and spirituals throughout the US published in the New York Times by Robert Winslow Gordon.
Gordon founded the Archive of American Folk Song (later renamed the Archive of Folk Culture) at the Library of Congress in 1928, and was a pioneer in the use of Edison cylinder recordings to document folk music.
