Eight (8) Hand-lettered Calling Cards/Friendship Tokens

  • United States , 19th century
United States, 19th century. Very good.. Eight (8) hand-lettered calling cards/tokens of friendship, displaying a range of techniques and artistic skill. Nicely represents the 19th century practice of calligraphic drawing, especially in the example lettered "Hettie Lee", which employs five different ink colors and calligraphic flourishes. Other imagery includes a ship at sea ("H.E.Clark"), two entwined hearts ("A.[?] Johnson"), three feathers ("Mr. & Mrs. A. A. Robinson"), and a sprig of wildflowers. Two of the cards are for "Eva Mae Bosworth" in a very fine calligraphic hand. Smallest measures 1.75" by 3", largest measures 2.5" by 3.5
