1997 · (Santa Rosa, CA)
by Schulz, Charles M.
(Santa Rosa, CA): n.p., 1997. Fine.. Original signed letter of almost saintly forbearance, written by the cartoonist in response to an importunate fan, accompanied by a signed Peanuts greeting card. The preceding correspondence to which this letter replies and refers can only be imagined, but Schulz's three firm and courteous paragraphs offer a strong suggestion. All of the dozens of daily writers to the then-74-year-old Snoopy creator "wanted something," he explains: autographs, drawings, donations, or, as seems probable in this case, detailed and personal engagement with a beloved legend, not his staff. "Can you imagine how difficult it is for us to accommodate each person who writes?" Anyhow, he closes, "Kindest regards." 4'' x 7.5''. Original typescript letter on watermarked stationery with Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates letterhead, signed by Schulz. With "Peanuts" Hallmark greeting card, also signed by Schulz, in yellow Hallmark envelope. Both items in original postmarked envelope, mailed from One Snoopy Place. Small chip along letter fold, obscuring recipient street address number, else fine.
