"Built on a dreary hill, surrounded by threatening mountains and buffeted by fierce snowstorms, Leadville is an ominous place, stark and cold. But hidden beneath the grime and bilious paint encrusted on the buildings like a patina are the remains of the wildest, gaudiest, most raucous mining camp in Colorado, the most glamorous, glittering silver town in the West. From the time silver was discovered in Leadville in 1875 until the collapse of the silver market in 1893, Leadville fascinated the world with its instant millionaires and villainous ways. It was known as both the wickedest city in the world and the most progressive mining town in Christendom." - p.118 'Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps.'.
