An anthology of 100 humorous stories and anecdotes in each volume. The author was a stage actor in Hungary and Austria and beginning in 1800 resident in the Burg Theater in Vienna. The book was issued at a particularly dark time - hence the title - for Austria after Napoleon's imposition of the humiliating Treaty of Schönbrunn and the beginning of preparations for his invasion of Russia. The book is rare, with only one holding of the second collection in Europe and a single copy of an 1815 edition. There is no copy located of the third and fourth collection (offered here) - clearly issued together (remainder?). See Kosch, IV, 2819.
