Before Sunset Buy a U.S. Government Bond of the 2nd Liberty Loan of 1917

This poster features the Statue of Liberty superimposed on a faintly and artfully rendered American flag. Vibrant red, white, and blue lettering is superimposed over the sea beneath the statue, urging the population to buy bonds. This poster is in excellent condition, and is a wonderful document for anybody interested in American memorabilia. One of the few female artists designing posters during the war, Eugenie De Land drew this original watercolor design for her second Liberty Loan poster. Its message suggests that the viewer's actions determine whether (truncated) the sun rises or sets as the evening sky transforms into an American flag over the Statue of Liberty. Eugenie de Land (1872- ?) studied under illustrator Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry before beginning her thirty-five-year career as an art teacher. She taught in Washington, D.C., at the Corcoran School of Art and McKinley High School before retiring in 1942. *often mis-identified as Eugene. (Inventory #: 320984)
