1970 · San Francisco
San Francisco: Ministry of Information, Black Panther Party, 1970. Douglas, Emory. Twelve 16mo. Christmas cards, each (4)pp. from single sheet. All feature a seasonal festive border, within which are bold statements calling for protest, freedom, solidarity, and revolutionary action. Some show the signature motif of a pig, standing for the neoliberal police state; others show photoreproduced portraits of Black Panther leaders Huey P. Newton, Eldridge Cleaver, and Bobby Seale; still others show illustrations of Black heritage, pride, and power. The underside of each card cites Douglas as Minister of Culture, and indicates the source of the card's accompanying quotation. Interiors all blank. A tremendous example of the intersection of the Black Panther Party's graphic program and its keen ability to harness mass print culture to reach the broadest section of the population. Some cards lightly toned, else a fine set, complete.
