Durham, North Carolina: W. T. Blackwell & Co. Printer: Donaldson Brothers, Five Points, New York, 1880. First Edition. NA. Very Good Minus. Strange, amusing and illogical promotion for smoking tobacco, shown here to save the life of J. Alphonso Brown afflicted by having smoked an inferior competitor but also thanks to Blackwell's, to have won a lovely bride in the bargain! Nine panel leporello, color printing on one side only. Title panel, then seven story panels, the last one serving as the explicit pitch for Blackwell's as well as the happy denouement of the tale. N.d., circa 1880. (The printer was in business between 1872 and 1891, according to one website.) Scarce augmented trade card, measuring 13 by 8.5 cm when closed, and extending to 69 cm wide when open. Only copy reflected on OCLC First Search held by American Antiquarian Society. Light to moderate soiling. A few closed tears along folds.
