In sixteenth-century Italy, an army of mercenary peasants kidnaps a nobleman's fiancée as revenge for unpaid debts. Although disgusted by the brutality of the peasants, the woman soon falls in love with the group's leader. Although the film's cynicism and violence made it unsuccessful at the box office upon release, it has since become a cult favorite.
