One sheet of Nippon Yusen Kaisha letterhead on onionskin paper, measuring 8 by 10 inches, writing and printing on recto. $1250.Autograph letter signed by John Muir to his friend and fellow Californian Charles Dwight Willard, recounting part of the itinerary on his 1903-04 world tour.Muir began his year-long sojourn with a trip to Yosemite with Theodore Roosevelt, heading to the east coast before traveling to Europe. On his travels he collected thousands of botanical specimens to be brought back to California. The letter, written and signed in pencil, reads in full: ""Hong Kong. S.S. Bayern. Sept 16, 1903. My dear Willard—I think I told you in another letter what a time we had in the Crimea, the Caucasus, Siberia and Manchuria. I am now on my way to India to the White Himalaya. Am now traveling alone in perfect freedom having left companions at Shanghai. May reach California about New Year or a little later. Cordially yours, John Muir."" Fold lines. Suitable for framing.
