1755. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Measures 20 1/4" x 26 1/8". Beautiful map of the Saint Lawrence seaway. Newfoundland is colored in green and red suggesting the outdated Colonial dispute between England and France, the southern portion was claimed by France until the Treaty of Utrecht. An inset map depicts the Great Lakes. A cartouche engraved by Catherine Haussard, one of the few female engravers in Paris during this time, features a beaver, a small boat, and hut-like structures. Minor chipping and tearing to edges. Slight water stain to bottom border. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century. His "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information. This map of Eastern Canada demonstrates his commitment to detail. (Inventory #: 321517)
