First Edition, first issue with October 1858 ads at back, "treacherous wine" on p.124, and Waverly Novels advert tipped in at front. Small octavo (19cm); 215pp+[12]ads. Publisher's blindstamped brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Boards rubbed at corners, with some scuffs and spotting to cloth; spine slightly cocked and chipped at ends. Front hinge starting; opens easily to after first few gatherings, but binding is holding. Chip at top of p.119 with flattened dog-ears to a few corners. Ownership inscriptions of W.A. Scott on full title and "Robt. N. Scott U.S.A." on flyleaf, likely the Reverend William Anderson Scott (1813-1885) and his son Union Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Nicholson Scott (1838-1887), along with a few scattered pencil brackets in margins and a brief pencil note on recto of final blank, else interior unmarked.
