Full leather binding, with marbled endpapers and edges. Volume 1 contains index, a full history of the state from the 1600s, plus county-specific chapters, a newspaper directory dated 1920, and black and white photos throughout. Volumes II-III are numbered continuously and contain detailed biographical information, as well as numerous black and white plates. Boards of all three volumes have moderate soiling and wear with some loss of material at either end of spines, and faded text block marbling. The front hinge of Volume 1 is detached at free front endpaper, and Volume III is partially detached. Six Guns notes the work for its inclusion of a lengthy chapter on Montana's vigilantes and outlaws (2149). Herd 2178. Stout was an editor and publisher who was active in public life, serving on the state's Public Service Commission, in both Montana's house and senate, and as the state's representative to the U.S. House of Representatives.
