Lincoln, Nebraska: University of Nebraska Press, 1983-2001. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Atlas, Elephant folio (50 cm), Herbarium quarto (30 cm), other volumes octavo (25 cm). Complete set of Moulton's definitive edition of the journals produced by the Corps of Discovery, including Atlas, Herbarium and Comprehensive Index. All volumes first edition, Blue cloth with gilt spine titling, all jackets present (except for Atlas, which was issued without one). Atlas in original shipping box. All volumes fine to very good: A few volumes show minor bumping to corners and spine ends, volumes 2, 8 and 9 with light creasing, closed tears to heads of spine. A large, heavy set that will require extra postage. From the personal collection of the late John Fryer, Livingston, Montana icon and owner of the 140-year-old Sax and Fryer bookstore (older than the State of Montana itself). The atlas box has original shipping label to Sax and Fryer, and a taped-on card that reads, "John's first edition -- Do not sell." A beautiful set of the collection, which was 20 years in the making. Moulton, who calls himself a "documentary historian," poured over the original handwritten journals for this project, adding footnotes with updates on tribes, maps, and plants. [Beckham 5h1]
