Paris: Jean Francois de La Harpe. unbound. Map. Engraving. Image measures 8.5 x 10". Sheet measures 9.5 x 11". This beautiful map of the Arabian Peninsula dating to 1740 was issued by Nicolas Bellin. The map shows incredible detail along the coastline with little inland detail. Identifies the pearl banks along the coast of Bahrain. Several other coastal features, shoals and banks are also noted. Qatar is identified as Katara. A beautiful rococo style title cartouche adorns the lower left. The map is in good condition with some wear along original fold lines and minor offsetting and fading. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingenieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office).
