Paris: HILLIARD D'AUBERTEUIL, 1782. Map. Engraving. Folded as issued, some foxing and stains but otherwise in good condition. 15 x 7.5 inches. This is an unusual 1782 map of the Hudson Valley depicting Vermont and New York, centered on Lake Champlain. Oriented with North to the left, the map extends from Montreal south as far as Staten Island. Published during the closing stages of the American Revolution, the map illustrates the the theater of the Saratoga Campaign. The annotation at the bottom left roughly translates as 'Colonel S. Leger, Commanding Officer of the Burgoyne Army, set out from Montreal to take Fort Stanwix; but he was obliged to abandon the siege, and to return by the same route.' The map is in good condition, with original plate mark visible, and minor toning. Notations throughout of indigenous areas. Harlem & 'Brocklyn' noted. The map appears in Hilliard d'Auberteuil, M. R. Essais historiques et politiques sur les Anglo-Americains. Hilliard Auberteuil, historian and economist, was best known as the author of 'Considerations sur etat present de la colonie francaise de Saint-Domingue' where he was critical of the French administration of the Colony.
