by Ellis, Henry
1831. 180 x 110 mm., [7 x 4 ½ inches]. 20 lines of legible text. Paper stock at soiled, otherwise sound. Folded with wax seal.
Letter from Henry Ellis, Principal Librarian of the British Museum to a Mr. Soley, presumably a physician attending Mr. James Thurston, a Porter at the BM. Porter has requested a "month's visit to the sea-side: because of failing health and Ellis request that Soley provide "a certificate, if the case really demands it, as may justify my granting to our Porter the extent of Indulgence which he is anxious, at the present moment, to receive." Ellis writes that "the ordinary grant of absence to the domestic servants of the Museum is for a period of a Fortnight, and the Porter's absence entails an expense." . (Inventory #: 1192)
