Heroes and Heroines of Bittersweet

  • 1931
By Beerbohm, Max
1931. [London: Leadlay, 1931].

Folio, title leaf, contents leaf, facsimile "Note by Max," and 5 mounted color plates. Original parchment-backed portfolio; plates loose as issued. Covers a bit soiled and worn, internally fine.

ß Limited to 900 copies, this is #403. This portfolio commemorates Coward's hugely successful 1929 operetta. "Sentiment is out of fashion," says Beerbohm in his note. "Yet Bittersweet, which is nothing if not sentimental, is not a dead failure ... Sentiment goes on; unaffrighted by the roarings of the young lions and lionesses of Bloomsbury, Bittersweet goes on, too; and Mr. Cochran [Charles Cochran, the producer] (being a sentimentalist), has wished that his survival should be commemorated by me in some sentimental drawings, which are here submitted to you." Along with Noel Coward, there are portraits of Peggy Wood, Georges Metaxa, Ivy St. Helier, and Cochran.
