1920s Integrated Nursing School Graduation Photograph, with one Black Student
- 1920
1920. Silver gelatin photograph of thirty-eight nursing students including one Black student. Circa 1920s. Photograph measures approx. 8" by 9.5". Photography studio stamp on verso from Commercial & Photo View Co. in Oakland, California. Image shows thirty-nine women posed standing in six rows on the front steps of a building, facing right with faces turned toward camera and smiling. Notably, one of the graduates on the far right side, fourth row, is a Black woman, while the rest are white. Nursing schools and other educational institutions of this time period were overwhelmingly racially segregated. Students are dressed in short sleeved nursing uniforms with white lapels, white shoes, and dark toned collared capes folded back over right shoulders to show a light toned lining. Mid-length nursing capes were popular from the 1920s-40s. Many of the women in this photo sport short, finger-waved hairstyles and drop-waist dresses indicative of the late 1920s. Minor light creasing. Chips to left side and top left corner on border not affecting image. Small rip at top left hand side. Overall very good condition. Scarce photograph of an early integrated class of nurses.
