Alexandria, VA: George E. French, 1876. First Edition. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's rather glorious heavily gilded bottle green and black embossed cloth, decorated to spine and front boards with masonic devices. 220pp. A trifle scuffed and rubbed in places, with just a touch of fraying to the head of the spine, sharp and neat, a very good copy. Internally clean. Brown coated endpapers, with front and rear gutters having some cosmetic, not structural, cracking to the paper. Illustrated throughout, with plates protected by tissue guards, including the frontispiece portrait of Washington. Pencil genealogy of a number of lodge members to the flyleaf, and with two small notes laid in at the front with related genealogical information.
Evidence suggests that this copy is from the library of the Johnston family, quite notable within the lodge, with a couple of areas of underlining and manuscript annotation in the text where the Johnston family is mentioned. George Johnston was one of Washington's ADC's, and members of the family were guests at Washington's funeral. A rather elegant history of one of America's more prominent Ancient Free and Approved Masonic lodges. (Inventory #: 81336)
