Original brown cloth spine with faded title rebacked onto the newer spine. White end sheets added front and back. Original blank end sheets present. Moderate toning to the paper. Some edge wear to some of the pages.
Previous owner inscription "Horace P. Porter M.D." located on the first blank end sheet. Laid inside the front cover are two pages of written verse on browned lined paper addressed "To H.A.S." and signed at the end - "H.P.P." The writing is difficult to read but appears to be verse about summer and nature. Horace P. Porter, from New Haven, was a surgeon in two Connecticut Regiments . His name is printed on page 324 as the Second Assistant Surgeon for the Seventh Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteers. He was mustered into service September 17, 1861. Porter is also listed on page 426. He was also appointed Surgeon, March 1864, in the 10th Connecticut Regiment and honorably discharged Nov. 5, 1864; term expired. Page 581 has a recent yellow square note inserted and reads - "W. A. S. Co. "C" 14th C.V. The names William Watson Spring is underlined in faint pencil on the page. (Inventory #: 31685)
