Graham Green (1904-1991) was a major English writer, the author of more than twenty-five novels, although he preferred to call books like "Our Man in Havana" "entertainments". Yet this "high comic mayhem", as Christopher Buckley calls it, has endured as an important work of literature, timeless in its skepticism about the competence of the intelligence community.
The motion picture based on the novel, starring Alec Guinness and Burl Ives, is so hilariously true to the story that viewers turn into readers.
William Hamilton, a prolific "New Yorker" magazine cartoonist, had already illustrated the Arion edition of "Tartuffe" (no. 68) when he accepted the assignent to add visual amusement to this book.
