He was instrumental in the implementation of the Truman Doctrine, which aimed to contain the spread of communism, the development of NATO, and the Marshall Plan, which provided economic aid to help rebuild post-World War II Europe. Acheson's memoir, "Present at the Creation," remains a seminal work on American foreign policy.
