African American Military History West Point Graduation Week Program 1936 Documenting Cadet Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Before Command of the Tuskegee Airmen
- 1936
1936. Benjamin Oliver Davis Jr. named in West Point graduation program of 1936, documentary evidence from the United States Military Academy marking the commissioning of the future commander of the Tuskegee Airmen and later United States Air Force general. Davis graduated from West Point in 1936 as only the fourth Black graduate in the academy's history and the first since 1889, completing his training during a period when the United States Army remained rigidly segregated. The program records Davis among the cadets commissioned that year, documenting the early career stage of a figure who would later command the 332nd Fighter Group and become one of the most influential African American officers in twentieth century United States military history.
June Week 1936 West Point graduation program. United States Military Academy: West Point, 1936. Original embossed gilt limp calf wrappers titled "June Week - 1936 - West Point." The printed program comprises 21 leaves and lists the members of the graduating class, including Benjamin Oliver Davis Jr. An early owner marked Davis's name in pencil with the notation "Black." Other graduates listed include Creighton Williams Abrams Jr., later commander of United States forces in Vietnam and namesake of the M1 Abrams tank, and William C. Westmoreland, United States Army Chief of Staff from 1968 to 1972. Accompanied by a typescript copy of the academy song "The Corps" on United States Military Academy letterhead.
The document originates from the final stage of Davis's cadet career during an era when institutional segregation limited opportunities for Black officers in the United States Army. Despite graduating from the nation's premier military academy, Davis was initially denied entry into the Army Air Corps and assigned to teach military tactics at Tuskegee Institute. That posting later led to his leadership of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, where the 332nd Fighter Group became one of the most celebrated African American combat units in American military history. Davis continued his military career after the war and ultimately became the first Black general officer of the United States Air Force. Program measures approximately 6½ × 4¾ inches. Minor chipping to one corner, scrapbook mount remnants on the rear wrapper, several pencil notations, and light wear to contents. Very good condition.
