A splendid and rare groundbreaking publication which is the best source for the origin of the Isotype, the way of showing social, technological, biological, and historical connections in pictorial form. Neurath, was the director of the museum for "Gesellschaft and Wirtschaft," and together with Gerd Arntz he developed a new language for quantitative information using icons. Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft was commissioned by the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig, and is one of the best-known examples of what was known as the "Viennese method of pictorial statistics" and which became known as Isotype. (Andel, Avant Garde Page Design 243.) A truly magnificent work, of the greatest rarity. OCLC lists a copy at Reading, which has the Neurath Archive, one in Switzerland and two in the U.S. at UPenn and U. of Southern Mississippi.
