William Painter, a native of Maryland, held 85 patents between 1858-1908. Contents include photographs of Baltimore, inventions, photograph portraits of family members, various manufacturing plants, and photographs of the Omaha Indian Tribe. Emilie (truncated) Painter Jackson was married to photographer William H. Jackson and both stayed with the tribe for a period. This copy is inscribed by the author on the verso of the right front flyleaf, "To Mrs. William W. Janney, from her sincere friend Orrin C. Painter, Feb. 9, 1915."
