San Francisco: Printed for The Book Club of California by John Henry Nash, 1925. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. One of 600 copies, large octavo size, 279 pp. An impressive selection from over 100 then-contemporary California poets, including Robinson Jeffers, Mary Austin, Stephen Vincent Benet, Gelett Burgess, Ina Coolbrith, Maynard Dixon, Miriam Allen de Ford, David Starr Jordan, Edwin Markham, Clark Ashton Smith, George Sterling, Xavier Martinez, Sara Bard Field, Charles Erskine Scott Field, Hildegarde Flanner, and Yone Noguchi.
Per David Magee, this title "represents the best of the younger poets of the day, such as Robinson Jeffers, who might not otherwise have found a hearing for their poems" (BCC 100 entry, p. 12).
___DESCRIPTION: Spanish goatskin back over brown paper-covered boards, gilt lettering and decorations on the back, fore-edge uncut, marbled endpapers, title and frontispiece poem in red and black, running titles within ruled and decorated borders; Garamond monotype on Aurelian laid toned paper (O'Day), large octavo size (9 5/8" by 6 1/4"), pagination: [2] [i-vii] viii-xxxviii [1] 2-237 [1, blank] [1, colophon], limited edition of 600 copies, note that while the colophon page has a space for numbering, in this copy such is blank, as is the other copy we have seen, as well as at least one other online copy, leading one to wonder whether any copies were, in fact, numbered.
