Red cloth stamped in gilt (no priority in color). Shelfwear and a spot on spine, under the title, spine a bit cocked, light foxing starting from both ends, a few marks in black endpapers, partly faded ownership signature opposite the half-title, dated in the year of publication (rare considering that the book was released between November 14 and about December 7 of that year). The hesitant issuing of this book (750 of the first issue of 200 were released in various bindings with July ads) is probably due to the lack of enthusiasm shown when first serialized in 1881, but upon the book's appearance, a critic hailed it as the best adventure story in print, and the rest is history.
