The lengthy work resulting from that voyage includes extensive descriptions of Mauritius, Mozambique Channel, and the Cape Colony, as well as many interior locations. "Backhouse and Walker were encouraged ... to visit the penal establishments and Aboriginal settlements and to make observations and suggest improvements. Their valuable reports were quite frank..." A good copy of the first edition bound in original blindstamped cloth with gold spine lettering. The three folding maps - "The World," "Tasmania," and "New South Wales," are in good condition.. 22.5 cm. xviii, 560, cxliv (appendices) pp. b/w plates, folding maps.
