First edition of this rare work on horse medicine. We find no copy of this edition in WorldCat in North America and only one copy of the 1849 edition.

Tokugawa Japan had a great many horses, and thus a need for literature on equine medicine. For example, Hachinohe domain 八戸藩 in northern Honshū raised around 15,000-20,000 horses, all requiring medical care (Suzuki Yoshitoki 鈴木淳世, “Edo jidai kita Tōhōku no jūigakusho” 江戸時代の獣医学書, Fumi no mori 11 [2021]: p. 1).

Our book contains information on diseases afflicting horses and what we believe are recipes for remedies, containing different ingredients with marked quantities. These remedies take up the bulk of Vols. 1 and 2. There is also a list of symptoms and their causes. If the horse is lying down and unable to get up, then that indicates a disease of the joints and bones. If it has trouble moving its hind legs, it is a problem of the shoulder. If the horse is grinding its teeth and keeping its head down, the heart — or mind — is the issue. If it gets up fast only to lie down immediately, it is an illness of the spleen, and so on.

The final volume discusses acupuncture for horses. Several illustrations show the various pressure points. The body parts and innards of the horse are also shown, with the internal parts depicted in very schematic fashion. Horses are shown from different angles. In some illustrations, their hooves are tied up.

Fine copy, some marginal staining.
