John Hale of New Hampshire was a longtime antislavery man. He won the presidential nomination of the short-lived Independent Democrats in 1852. George Julian of Indiana was his running mate. They would soon migrate to the new Republican Party in 1854.
This is a Massachusetts ticket for the upcoming national elections. Among the listed Electors are John Greenleaf Whittier; Samuel E. Sewall, who had previously run for Governor on the Liberty Party ticket; and other erstwhile Liberty Party men like Joel Hayden.
A coalition of antislavery Whigs, old Liberty and Free Soil Party men, and Independent Democrats would form the Republican Party in 1854.
