Nathaniel Wyeth's failed attempt to establish anAmerican commercial interest in Oregon was directlyinspired by Hall Kelley and his promotion of Oregon. Thisbook contains Wyeth's letters before and during his trips toOregon, as well as his journals of both expeditions. Thejournals contain excellent information and include one ofthe most flattering portrayals of natives available (seepages 191-193). However, his letters are the unexpectedgem of this publication and contain real insight into thebusiness of setting up an expedition, even to the extent ofwriting to the father of one lad determined to join. Wyethwrote a few letters to Kelley himself, showing increasingimpatience with the would-be organizer, while his ownplans advanced to fruition. (Jones & Givens, Oregon 100, #98)
