According to the Verne Bibliography, this is the eighth novel in his Voyages Extraordinaires series. It was first published in 1870 in the Journal de Débats. This is the first illustrated edition, published on October 10, 1871, with illustrations by Férat, Pannemaker and Hildibrand. (The first printing code, however, ends with '72' leading to the impressioin that 1872 was the publication date. It was later issued, in late 1872, as the sixth double volume, paired with the 'Aventures de Trois Russes et de Trois Anglais".
