First editions of both letters. Two titles bound together in one octavo volume (7 1/8 x 4 194 inches; 180 x 110 mm). [2, blank], 154, [2, publisher's ads]; 178, [6, publisher's ads] pp. Both title-pages printed within a double-rule border. We could find no copies beside the present copy of the second letter on Rare Book Hub.
Full contemporary paneled sheep. Boards stamped in blind. Spine with a paper label, lettered ink. Boards with initials "IMK" stamped in blind and Initials "WC" stamped in gilt. Spine with red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Front and back outer hinges and spine extremities nearly repaired. Some general spotting and toning throughout. Leaf A6 of first letter with some wear to fore-edge margin, not touching text. Leaves H & H8 of the second letter, toned. Previous owner's old ink notes on verso of final leaf of each letter, slightly bleeding through to the recto. Previous owner's old ink signature stamp on lower margin of title-page of the first work, and final ad leaf of the second work. Still a very good copy.
The Bishop of Worcester, Edward Stillingfleet "engaged in a controversy with Locke on the doctrine of the Trinity, which he believed was impugned by some passages in the 'Essay on the Human Understanding.' He published three pamphlets on the subject (1696-7), each of which was answered by Locke" (DNB).
