MORRISON WAITE (1816-1888). Waite served as the seventh Chief Justice of the United States from 1874 until his death. ROBERT FINDLEY PAINE (1810-1888). Paine served as United States district attorney for the Northern District of Ohio and a judge on the Common Pleas Bench. ALS. 1 pg. 8 x 10. July 5, 1862. Toledo. An autographed letter signed M.R. & R. Waite to R.F. Paine Esq.: Dr Sir, we notice by the papers that an indictment has been formed against Hinds. May we ask what course under the circumstances you intend to pursue against his bail -. This letter was written while Robert Findley Paine was serving as the United States district attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, and while Morrison Remick Waite, still a decade from selection as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was practicing law in Ohio with his brother, Richard Waite. No online record appears to exist regarding the case mentioned in the letter. The letter is in excellent condition on lined paper.
