Cary's work was characterized by clear lettering and great delicacy of touch, setting a new standard in cartography that emphasized accuracy and detail over decorative elements. His notable atlases, such as Cary's New Universal Atlas (1808), became standard texts in the early 19th century. By the time of his death in 1835, Cary had become an authoritative name in private map publishing, leaving a lasting legacy in the field. Cary's business, later managed by his sons George and John Jr. as G. and J. Cary, continued to be a leader in the map publishing field until 1850. (Inventory #: 322940)
