Multi-Lingual Cross-Stitch Sampler Patterns for Children

  • Paris, France: Maison Sajou, 1850
Paris, France: Maison Sajou, 1850. Good to very good. Toned with some chipping, short tears, a little dust soiling.. A folding booklet of eight (8) charming cross-stitch sampler designs for children learning to stitch. The designs contain alphabets, a cross above the Society of Jesus emblem, a donkey and dog, and plenty of decorative borders. Interestingly, some of the designs are in French and some in Spanish; for example, a design with the Virgin Mary has the subtitle "Santa Maria", and there are two sampler designs for children to give to their parents-- one reading "Papa / Maman" and one reading “Padre / Mama”. The cover is printed on bright green paper, and advertises the business in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Portuguese. A truly multi-lingual object! Eight folding printed panels housed in green printed folder measuring approx. 3” by 4.5”. The Maison Sajou was a sewing and haberdashery store in Paris known in the 19th century for its cross stitch and embroidery pattern books.
