By Raum, Green B.
Washington DC: Office of Internal Revenue, 1877. Very good. Broadside; 18 1/2 x 12; beige stock, printed in black in various fonts, with several lines filled in manuscript; several punctures along margins from being afixed to a surface (wall [?]); a bit of age-toning and minor spotting; in good to very good condition. The ultimate buzzkill, the special taxes covered every vice one could think of, including alcohol, leaf tobacco, retail liquor, stills, cigars, and various classes of peddlers of tobacco - on foot, or on horses and other animals. The broadsides were intended to be displayed at Post Offices and, presumably, businesses - ordering the establishments to procure a special-tax stamp, denoting the payment of said tax. Green B. Raum (1829 - 1909), who had compiled the text, was a lawyer, author, Brigadier General in the Union Army, and a commissioner of the IRS.
