Bishop first came to Brazil in 1951, and once there, the poet "reshaped and redefined her entire career around Brazil from the moment of her arrival [...] so much so that her mature work is inconceivable without Brazil. Bishop's decision to stay quite literally transformed her career" (Hicok). Half the poems in QUESTIONS OF TRAVEL have overtly Brazilian themes, while the rest, separated by the section title "ELSEWHERE," hearken back to her experiences in Nova Scotia, Massachusetts, the "world of books gone flat" of St. Elizabeths hospital, all seen from a new distance of time and space. 8.25'' x 6''.
