Originally published in 1868, and "the only printed record of the soldiers of Kansas who were mustered in the service of the united States during the war of the rebellion," this is the official reprint of 1896, and although marked Volume I on title page, it also contains the contents of the original Volume II. Of the original 1500 copies, only 500 were for sale, and all but a handful of copies of Volume II (which also included the Official Military History) survived the warehouse fire shortly after its publication. Includes all of the Rosters and 'The Official Military History of Kansas Regiments during the Civil War and in Campaigns along the Platte and in Wyoming.' The history was prepared by J. B. McAfee from his own personal experiences in the army of the frontier . . . . and from the personal narratives of many soldiers. . . ." (Kansas Hist. Coll. vol. 6). It was republished in 1870.
