by BATEMAN, James (1811-1897)
London: J. Ridgway & Sons, 1838. Hand-coloured lithograph, drawn on stone by Gauci, after an original drawing by Miss S.A. Drake. Magnificent hand-colored orchid from James Bateman's "The Orchidaceae of Mexico and Guatemala."
The Cattleya Skinneri, now known as the Guarianthe Skinneri, is a beautiful plant native to Mexico and Central America that was named by Bateman after George Ure Skinner, a British merchant living in Guatemala who sent Bateman many orchid specimens from there. The species is very common and popular in Costa Rica, where it was named the national flower and is called the Guaria Morada. James Bateman's The Orchidaceae (truncated)
