- Hardcover
- London: John Stagg, 1737
London: John Stagg, 1737. Hardcover. Fair. Full contemporary calf binding with five raised bands on spine, gilt border to boards, title page printed in red & blank ink. Third edition. With the ownership signature of Charles Thomson, who was Secretary of the Continental Congress.
Previous owner has written in pencil that it was from his library, and there is an old newspaper clipping about collectible signatures laid in. Old ink price of 8/6 to front endpaper. Spine ends chipped, front hinge tender, ffep detached. Thompson's signature is clear & sharp.
Thomson was the only signer other than Hancock for the first printing of the Declaration of Independence. This book was published when he was 8 years old, and the autograph looks fairly adult; it's possible the 8/6 is the price he paid for the book. No markings to text; soil from use.
