"The author tells his three journeys; the first to Shigatse from Calcutta through Sikkim and Chumbi valley, then to Chinese Turkestan through Simla, Leh, the Karakorum Pass, Khotan, Yarkand (truncated) and Kashgar. Thence he travelled west by the Terek Pass to Kokand, Tashkent, Bokhara, Merv, Mashhad, Teheran and Baku. He left Calcutta in Jan. of 1906 and reached London at the end of Jan. of 1907" (Yakushi). Fraser's principal concern was Central Asian geo-politics and the potential threat to India - the cornerstone of the British Empire - from Russia.
