Lieutenants Couts and Whipple had an assignment of running the new international boundary line in the vicinity of the Gila and Colorado rivers and in accordance with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This boundary was considered one of the most difficult to do. Lt. Couts adventure had already been published. Lt. Whipple's report was buried in a maze (truncated)
