First Edition, Offprint Issue. Garrison-Morton.com 2516: "Welch grouped together the diseases caused by Cl. perfringens, earlier discovered by him in association with Nuttall." Variant offprint issues of Welch's paper were published in the same year by the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal and the Phladelphia Medical Journal. Welch, a pathologist and bacteriologist, was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; he also served as the first dean of the Hopkins School of Medicine, and founded the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the first school of public health in the United States.
