Our Blue Jackets.

  • London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1878
By “An Eyewitness”. (Sophia Gertrude Wintz).

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1878. Summary of Miss Westons Life and Work. She spent more than 20 years working among English sailors. Some religion and temperance, naturally, but also interesting info on the history of the Sailors Rest and Institute, an early sailors welfare effort. Pretty scarce, too. Worldcat notes only eight libraries holding copies, four of them in the US. With a nice little broadsheet prospectus laid in, promoting this book and eight of Miss Westons pamphlets - they were known as Blue Backs, and presumably dealt with temperance and religion. Light cover wear, but very good condition in original blue cloth with gold lettering and cover design.. 17 cm. x, 190, (8 adverts.) pp. b/w frontispiece and plates
