The diary of Captain Bell, official journalist of the Major Stephen H. Long expedition, was previously unpublished. Bell gives a day by day account of his journey from West Point to the Rockies and return to Washington. He crossed Pennsylvania by stagecoach, sailed down the Ohio, and rode horseback from St. Louis to Council Bluffs. After making the exploratory tour with Major Long he returned to the national capital via Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Clark/Brunet 118.
