Lovely and sought-after adaptation of Perrault's fairy tale, freely translated by the author to facilitate reading aloud, and the earliest of Brown's illustrated books to win the Caldecott Medal. Brown, a graduate of the New York State College for Teachers (later SUNY Albany), worked as a high school teacher and children's librarian for several years while writing and illustrating; her early work from that time included CINDERELLA and her classic retelling of STONE SOUP.
