Hay has profusely underlined some portions related to sexuality, and added some minor marginal notations in his distinctive handwriting. On page 336, for example, he writes that "Family ties, or lack of them - familial clan or Society memberships, or lack of them would be of vital importance to Berdache story." (Hay was among those who later popularized the term "Two-Spirit" to replace the term Berdache, which many found offensive).
