Harrods, Ltd, 1911
London: Harrods, Ltd, 1911. First Edition. Wraps. Two staples. Very Good. All the tchotschkes one sees at antique stores relating to the Royal Family and then some, all sold by the legendary department store in connection with the coronation of George V and Queen Mary. Categories listed on the first page (page 3) are Public Decorations, Illuminations, Pavilions and Marquees Erected, Artistic Decorations of Every Description, Armorial Shields, Rich Draperies, Banners, Mottos, Heraldic Trophies, Flags, Pennants, Floral Displays, Decorative Illuminations for Buildings, Parks and Gardens, Electric, Gas, Candle Lighting and Transparencies, Temporary Ball Rooms complete with every requisite, Coronation Souvenirs, Medals and Novelties of every kind." To be more specific about products not so obviously on this list, the products include toy flags, plaques and medallions, Printed in full color, with 27 of the pages qualifying as color plates, with all or almost all of the page taken up with a colored display of products, generally photos processed to look a bit like drawn illustration, or truly drawn illustration. And surprisingly scarce, given the prestige and prominence of Harrods. No copies listed on OCLC First Search, nor any found in internet commerce on the date this description was drafted. Oblong, 21.5 by 28 cm. 3-36 pp. (Wraps were counted in pagination in the front.) Front cover has mounted color illustration of a smartly dressed attractive couple waving from a balcony overlooking the parade route, and the title page within has a soft focus impressionistic color illustration of a larger group of mostly female spectators gathered on a grand balcony, all sporting the large feather-y hats of the day. The last page of the catalogue, finally, is given over to four lush color illustrations of Harrods' patrons in the inviting ultra-luxe parts of the store -- the restaurant, the flower and fruit department, the millinery department, the Royal Exchange -- we presume that this last department handled payments and the like in the days long before the advent of credit cards. Otherwise, the illustrations of the many things on offer are based on or derived from photographs. We are including with this catalogue, which is complete, a four page folded sheet, each of its four pages about the same page size of those in the catalogue, and each page with photographs of medals and ribbons created for the event, and a smattering of other things -- spoons, cigarette cases, etc. These pages look as if they could have been pulled out from the catalogue, but that isn't the case. Just an additional piece of promotional literature, perhaps a supplement. The wraps reattached to the rest of the text block with archival tape, front and rear. Front cover has a narrow chip on top edge. Light foxing to wraps, mostly on rear cover. Glossy leaves within mostly clean. The four page separate promotion is rougher, with shallow closed tears and a good bit of dusty soiling.
